Leon J. Nesti, MD PhD
Leon J. Nesti, MD PhD is a fellowship-trained, board certified Orthopaedic Hand and Upper Extremity Reconstructive Surgeon with Certification of Added Qualifications in Hand Surgery. He specializes in the treatment of problems affecting the peripheral nervous system, fingers, hand, wrist, forearm, elbow and utilizes advanced arthroscopic and minimally invasive surgical techniques when possible. Dr. Nesti has a particular interest and tremendous experience with the intrinsic biological healing properties of the body and is a proponent of stem cell and regenerative medicine techniques.
Dr. Nesti has lived in the Annapolis area for over two decades and has a wealth of clinical experience serving military beneficiaries since 2002 as an Active Duty Army Orthopaedic Surgeon at Walter Reed. He is a retired Army Colonel after over 20 years of service and has been the consulting Hand Surgeon to the United States Military Academy, the United States Naval Academy and the White House. Additionally, Dr. Nesti has served as the Director of the Walter Reed Hand Fellowship and the Walter Reed Peripheral Nerve Clinic. He is a Professor of Surgery and Professor of Neurosciences at The Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences. Dr Nesti has served overseas on multiple combat deployments and has worked closely with Army Special Forces, Navy Seals, Marine Expeditionary Forces and Air Force PJ’s.
Dr. Nesti, a Vermont native, received his BS from the United State Military Academy at West Point, and his MD PhD through the clinician-scientist training program at Thomas Jefferson University and Jefferson Medical College (now Sidney Kimmel Medical College) in Philadelphia, PA. After completing his Orthopaedic Surgery residency at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, Dr. Nesti continued his subspecialty training in Hand and Upper Extremity Reconstructive Surgery in the combined Walter Reed, Curtis National Hand Center program. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, a Fellow of the American Orthopedic Association and an Active Member of the American Society for Surgery of the Hand.
Dr. Leon Nesti is married to Dr. Heather Nesti, an Ophthalmologist in Annapolis and they have three children who keep them very busy while not in the office or operating room. As a family they enjoy skiing, sailing, tennis and hiking and as parents they enjoy going to their children’s’ various sporting events or music concerts.
